How Fox News Covers The 50th Anniversary Of The March On Washington

Today is the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, which brought about a quarter million protesters to the National Mall to demand passage of civil rights legislation.

In that spirit, Fox News' America Live had a discussion yesterday of one of the key problems facing black Americans 50 years on: rap.

While, sure, there’s a legal case to be made that Ted Cruz is eligible to be president based on the fact that his mom was a citizen when he was born, I am still troubled by the release of his birth certificate.

Now before I get too far, let me just say I love the way he espouses and defends conservative ideology. He is a great spokesman for our Eternal Principles that were passed from God to Moses to Jesus to the Founding Fathers to Reagan and finally passed, after some fumbling by the Bushes, to the Tea Party. But like most Real Americans, fancy talk isn’t enough for me. Sarah Palin knows what I’m talking about.

Disturbing revelations of the Birth Certificate

#1 He hasn’t even apologized for being born in Canada. Frankly I’m insulted when I think about this, aren’t you? Does he think we don’t know? That we don’t care?

#2 Shows poor choice of parents. Why didn’t he choose an American citizen as his father? Does he secretly hate Americans in the same way that Obama hates white people, as Glenn Beck proved in 2009?

#3 If he didn’t choose to be born in US, how can we be sure he will make the right choices for America?

#4 Canada isn’t Kenya, but it’s still not the US. How can we count on someone born under the Canadian dollar to return us to the gold standard? I mean, vending machines won’t even take Canadian quarters, so how can we accept a Canadian born man as our president?

#5 Born in 1970. Can anyone so young be counted on? I mean, he doesn’t even have any memory of the glory days of Jim Crow.

Reasonable Doubt about Ted Cruz

And all this just adds to the ongoing list of concerns I and others in the Tea Party have with Senator Cruz:

#6 Went to Harvard. Just like Obama.

#7 Lost his case before the Supreme Court. Could someone who professes to love the Constitution as much as Ted Cruz does lose before this court? How is that even possible? I mean, all you need to do is flash your GOP credentials and you’ve already got Scalia, Thomas, Alito and Roberts. Something’s fishy here.

#8 No one heard of him outside Texas before last year. In order to keep the FBI from infiltrating, the Mafia traces people back to Sicily before someone can be a made man. Shouldn’t we do the same? Shouldn’t we be making sure that all Republicans are descended from Confederate war veterans? Can anyone else be trusted to value states’ rights enough?

So, after careful consideration of all the evidence, I just can’t support Ted Cruz for president, and encourage my fellow Tea Partiers to reject him as well. While he talks a good game– a great game– he’s just not one of us.

African-American US Representatives by the Numbers

Maryland has elected blacks to the U.S. House at the highest percentage in the nation since 1870; 25 states have yet to elect any African-Americans to the chamber

Leading up to the 50th Anniversary of Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream" speech, there has been significant discussion on the state of race relations and racial equality in the country and the degree of progress that has been made over the last half-century.

Related to that discussion is the representation of African-Americans in elected office, particularly at the federal level.

The most glaring statistic in that regard is that only three states have elected blacks to the U.S. Senate in American history (Illinois, Massachusetts, and Mississippi) and just two states since Reconstruction.

Due in part to redistricting efforts in recent decades, African-Americans have, however, gradually increased their numbers in the U.S. House, and now hold 10 percent of seats in the chamber while making up 13 percent of the population.

However, 25 states have yet to elect an African-American to the U.S. House and 49 percent of the total number of U.S. House elections won by blacks in history have come from five states: New York, California, Illinois, Michigan, and Georgia.

After the election of blacks in 38 U.S. House contests from 1870 until the end of the 19th Century, none served in the chamber until 1929 when Illinois Republican Oscar De Priest won the state's 1st Congressional District.

Since then, the percentage of seats won by African-Americans has increased during each subsequent 10-year redistricting period culminating with the 43 black U.S. Representatives (9.8 percent) who have been elected to serve in the U.S. House for the 113th Congress (although two did not serve: Jesse Jackson, who resigned, and Tim Scott, who was appointed to the U.S. Senate).

Michigan's John Conyers (pictured at top) is the longest serving African-American Congressman in history - currently in his 25th term.

New York's Charlie Rangel is second at 22 terms followed by former Missouri U.S. Representative Bill Clay at 16 terms.

By Geographical Region

During the 2012 cycle, Nevada became the 25th state to send an African-American to the House of Representatives when Stephen Horsford was victorious in the state's newly-created 4th Congressional District.

Nevada is just one of two Western states that have elected a black to the House, along with California which has elected a dozen different members including three this past cycle (Karen Bass, Barbara Lee, and Maxine Waters).

Western states, of course, tend to be less populated and many have low African-American populations, which has limited the election of blacks in this region.

(Examples of U.S. Representatives who are elected in districts without significant or majority black populations tend to be rare).

States that have never elected an African American to the U.S. House are spread out across all four regions of the country (regions as designated by the U.S. Census Bureau):

· Five states in the Midwest: Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska, North Dakota, and South Dakota

· Five states in the Northeast: Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont

· Four states in the South: Arkansas, Delaware, Kentucky, and West Virginia.

· Eleven states in the West: Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming.

By State

A total of 127 African-Americans have been elected U.S. Representative in the history of the country.

Illinois - the only state to elect two blacks to the Senate in the popular vote era - has elected the largest number with 15.

California is next with 12 followed by South Carolina and New York with 10 and Georgia and North Carolina with eight.

Some southern states populate the top of the list due to several black U.S. Representatives getting elected during Reconstruction to the end of the 1800s.

Twenty different African-Americans were elected during this span with eight in South Carolina, four in North Carolina, three in Alabama, and one each in Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Virginia.

Overall, these 127 African-American representatives have collectively won 746 elections to the House of Representatives - 90 in New York, 89 in California, 86 in Illinois, 55 in Michigan, and 46 in Georgia.

The election of blacks in these five states represents 49 percent of all such contests won in U.S. history.

By Percentage of Seats Won

Since the first black won election to the U.S. House in 1870 (Republican Joseph Rainey of South Carolina), Maryland has elected the highest percentage of blacks to the chamber at 7.2 percent.

A quarter of Maryland's eight-member delegation has been African-American since the 1992 cycle and the state is currently represented by 10-term Democrat Elijah Cummings and four-term Democrat Donna Edwards.

South Carolina is next at 7.1 percent, although 19 of the 32 contests won by blacks in the Palmetto State took place in the 19th Century.

Georgia is next at 6.0 percent, followed by Florida at 5.5 percent, Michigan and Illinois at 5.2 percent, and California at 4.9 percent.

Of the 25 states that have elected at least one black to the House of Representatives, Minnesota and Wisconsin have done so at the lowest rate (0.7 percent), followed by Connecticut (0.8 percent), Nevada (1.0 percent), and Oklahoma (1.2 percent).

In total, 102 of the 127 black U.S. Representatives have been Democrats (80 percent) while 25 have been Republicans (20 percent).

The only Republicans to serve in the 20th or 21st Centuries were Oscar De Priest of Illinois, Gary Franks of Connecticut, Tim Scott of South Carolina, J.C. Watts of Oklahoma, and Allen West of Florida.

West's defeat in the 2012 cycle and Scott's appointment to the U.S. Senate in January 2013 means that all African-American U.S. Representatives in the 113th Congress are Democrats.

I was shocked to learn President Obama is taking yet another vacation today. When I and other Congressional leaders left office for our 5 week recess, we expected him to work hard to meet our demands to defundObamacare, eliminate food stamps, and cut Medicare and Social Security by 50% so that we wouldn’t have to shut the government down and default on the national debt. But I guess he’s just not going to do that, is he?

87 vacation days in less than 5 years. Does he ever do any work? I mean, just compare his 87 vacation days to the mere 17 weeks off us Congressmen get each year. It’s staggering his laziness.

And don’t bring up presidential vacation days before 2009 because, like all members of the Tea Party, I can’t remember anything from that period except for 9/11. I’m sure Reagan and George W. Bush worked very hard to make this country great and didn’t laze about like this guy.

It’s like the guy ran for office non-stop for two full years while serving in the Senate just so he could goldbrick in office for 8 years. What a moocher!

And it’s so expensive! He and Michelle are so entitled that they insist on a private jet rather than just flying coach. And all the people they drag along on board with them? I don’t get to drag 50 Secret Service agents along with me on vacation, and I’m sure you don’t either, so why do we pay all this money so he can? It’s just so wasteful, so unseemly!

It’s just so insulting that he’s taken 87 vacation days, not to mention all the golfing, while we in the House have worked tirelessly on important things like repealing Obamacare 40 times and holding hearings about how to betterregulate vaginas. Someone should start a WhiteHouse.gov petition to tell Obama to GET BACK TO WORK. I’d do it myself, but I don’t get back from vacation for 4 more weeks.

Understanding The History And Purpose Of Fox News

You’d think a thing like FOX couldn’t happen in the United States. Although they’re free to be crazy and free to support the Republican Party, you’d think Americans would be too smart to fall for the made-up outrages, dishonest reporting and relentless appeal to our meaner nature. Unfortunately, many Americans are not as smart as we used to assume: a huge swath of Americans (especially elderly white Southerners) believe FOX is just another news media outlet. They aren’t.

What is FOX? Pensitore Review pulled no punches in answering that question back in 2009:

FOX News is indisputably the most popular cable news channel. And yet in 13 years, Fox has never broken a story. That’s okay, because it is not in the news business. It is in the news-shaping business. Its programming is an admixture of right-wing propaganda and fear-porn for feeble-minded paranoiacs, served up by spokesmodels who have no clue what they are reading.

Whew! Could that be true? I report/You decide:

Nixon White House aide Roger Ailes in the 1970′s created fake news stories that favored President Nixon. He shipped these pre-mixed video packages to TV stations around the country at the expense of rightwing extremist Joseph Coors. It was all b.s. all the time, but the TV stations, pretending they had a correspondent in Washington, ran this propaganda as straight news. Now that Ailes runs FOX News, his goals are the same: to spread republicanism by altering the news.

There are thousands of examples of FOX not just “leaning” in a particular direction on an issue… but actively changing around the words and meanings of interviews to make them seem to say the opposite of what the person interviewed actually said; of lies about what happened; of incorrect graphics…for example, calling Congressman Mark Foley a Democrat when he got caught in gay chatter with pages and calling Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords a Republican when there was an outpouring of sympathy for her after she got shot.

FOX took a sparsely-attended tea-party rally in Washington and spliced in video of a heavily-attended event of an entirely different nature from months earlier.
FOX has gotten caught using image manipulation software to edit the appearance of people they don’t like to make them appear more sinister.
FOX alters poll results to mislead its viewers; in one case, their massacre of a Rasmussen poll on climate change ended up with a poll number of 120%–mathematically impossible, of course, except in FOX world.
On 4-24-09… White House correspondent Wendell Goler cropped a comment by Obama and took it out of context — effectively reversing the statement’s meaning — to falsely suggest that Obama supports creating a health care system “like the European countries.”
A 2010 Ohio State University study of public misperceptions about the so-called “Ground Zero Mosque” found that viewers who relied on Fox News were 66% more likely to believe incorrect rumors than those with “low reliance” on Fox News ~Wikipedia

A study by the Program on International Policy Attitudes showed 67% of Fox viewers believed that the “U.S. has found clear evidence in Iraq that Saddam Hussein was working closely with the al Qaeda terrorist organization” (He wasn’t. He hated, feared and banned them, but you’d never know that by watching FOX).

Wait, it gets worse: For all other networks and news sources, the MORE you watch them, the MORE you know about the actual facts. Those who view CNN, NBC, ABC, CBS, MSNBC, & NPR the MOST, have the BEST grasp of the FACTS. With FOX it – is- the – opposite!! Which is what gave birth to the mocking slogan: THE MORE YOU WATCH FOX, THE LESS YOU KNOW.

In the summer of 2003, 34% of Americans who did not follow the news very closely believed evidence had been found that linked Iraq with al Qaeda before the U.S. invasion. 42% of people who were moderate consumers of FOX news had that opinion. Among those who “watched FOX News very closely” … that number was 80% !! ~Political Science Quarterly, Vol. 118, #4 THE MORE YOU WATCH FOX, THE LESS YOU KNOW!

FOX News’ Happening Now cropped clips of Obama from an April 3 speech in France to falsely suggest that Obama only criticized the United States. In doing so, Happening Now joined conservative commentators and Fox News hosts who have cropped or misrepresented Obama’s overseas remarks to falsely suggest, in the words of host Sean Hannity, that Obama was “blam[ing] America first” and, more broadly, that Obama’s earlier overseas trip constituted an “apology tour.”

Fox News presented a clip of Joe Biden criticizing John McCain’s “the fundamentals of the economy are strong” statement…. Problem is, this was something Biden was QUOTING…from SIX MONTHS EARLIER… but it was edited by FOX to make it seem that Biden was stating it as his own opinion. The bogus clip was introduced by Live Desk co-host Martha MacCallum as comments Biden had made in interviews THIS WEEKEND.

FOX pushed the bogus stat that cap-and-trade would cost “every American family $1,761 annually.” PolitiFact.com has labeled the statistic false and noted that the talking point has been pushed by Republicans.

On 9/30/09 FOX Gregg Jarrett said on the air that the Obama Department of Justice “thinks it’s OK to intimidate white people, not OK to intimidate black people at the polls.”

‎”If we went back … to the fall of 2008, to the campaign, that was a time this country was in two wars that we had a financial collapse probably more significant than any financial collapse since the Great Depression. If you were a Fox News viewer in the fall election what you would have seen were that the biggest stories and the biggest threats facing America were a guy named Bill Ayers and a something called ACORN.” ~Anita Dunn

A 2011 Kaiser Family Foundation survey on U.S. misconceptions about health care reform found that Fox News viewers scored lower for factual knowledge than other news viewers.
