Walmart protester steppin' for justice during surprise flash mobWhen these Walmart workers tried to deliver a petition, the managers refused to take it. You’ll be amazed by what happens next.
September 5th was a great day for Walmart haters, as workers and their supporters rallied in 15 cities across the nation to demand that Walmart pay higher wages and reinstate the 70 Walmart workers who got fired for striking this summer. 20 of these workers are affiliated with the Walmart workers’ advocacy group, Organization United for Respect (OUR Walmart). Al Jazeera reminds us that Walmart is America’s largest employer, with 1.3 million workers.
According to Labor Notes:
They didn’t strike this time—but Walmart workers and their allies marched, rallied, danced, blew horns, and took arrests in a coordinated day of action in 15 cities yesterday. They were protesting the company’s recent crackdown on worker activists.
Any one who’s been following Reverend Dr. William Barber’s Moral Mondays knows when folks in Raleigh, NC protest, they’re not fooling around. And on Thursday, Raleigh’s Walmart workers did not disappoint. A somber group of workers walked into a Walmart and their leader sternly attempted to hand the managers a huge looseleaf binder holding a petition with 170,000 signatures demanding that Walmart rehire the workers fired during the strikes.
The managers predictably refused to accept the petition, and then something amazing happened, as reported by Labor Notes:
As the managers give their canned response (they can’t accept the binder, they’ll talk with “associates” but non-employees have to leave), shouts begin to echo through the store. A flash mob in yellow “UFCW [United Food and Commercial Workers] Local 1208 Steppin’ 4 Justice” bursts forth to perform an energetic synchronized routine.
Here’s the flash mob video:
